interested in gender and economics. The

GERPA
annual meeting, Dubai November 15-19, 2009
The GERPA second
annual meeting took place in Dubai
on November 15-17, 2008 in collaboration with the Dubai School of
Government. The meeting/conference aims
at bringing together a network of academics, researchers and policymakers from
the Arab region and the Gulf, to contribute to the debate about the challenges
and opportunities of producing and disseminating research on Gender and Public
Policy in the Arab World. The two gender networks from MENA, the Arab Network
for Gender and Development (@NGED) and the Persian Gender Network (PGN)
participated at the meeting and their input was crucial for the elaboration of
a dissemination strategy for the GERPA research findings. The goal of this two
day conference is to present the findings of the GERPA research papers on a
variety of cross-cutting gender themes such as: education, employment, health
and poverty in the Middle East. This will be
followed by an exploration of how gender sensitive research can be disseminated
and more effectively integrated within teaching programs and in policymaking
processes. More than 150 GERPA, @NGED and PGN members participated in the
meeting.

The World Bank Labor Market Policy Core Course:
Jobs for a Globalizing World
The World Bank, March 31st- April 11th
The World Bank’s Labor Market Policy core course is a learning opportunity offered to researchers, academics and policymakers from around the world to bring them up to speed on current thinking and best practices in labor market policies. This initiative matches perfectly with GERPA’s main mission, which is to reinforce mainstream economic research in the MENA region and to make gender a regular component of economic analysis. The course represents an important opportunity for GERPA grantees to benefit from the latest research and policy and operational experience from experts in the World Bank with the possibility to build on these experiences to expand their research activities. CAWTAR and the WORLD BANK announce their sponsoring of GERPA grantees to benefit from the course. So far, 13 grantees (representing 13 out of the 27 projects) have registered for the course.
The GERPA/@NGED Workshop
April 5-6, 2008, The State Plazza Hotel
Washington DC
CAWTAR and the WORLD BANK announce a joint workshop between GERPA and the Arab Network for Gender and Development (@NGED). The workshop will be held in Washington DC with the participation of GERPA grantees, @NGED members (women chambers of commerce, research centers, media, GOs and NGOs) and a number of World Bank representatives. As GERPA and ANGED are two programs executed by CAWTAR and funded by the World Bank, the objective of the meeting is to brainstorm on how to synergize the strengths of these two programs, i.e. research, advocacy and networking. Participants are expected to formulate a dialogue over policy recommendations in relation to gender and development in the Arab region and to elaborate a common strategy and action plan to disseminate key findings on priority issues identified throughout the GERPA project. In this framework, GERPA grantees will present the advancement of their research projects and share preliminary findings with @NGED members. Discussion will follow on how the network can become a medium for dissemination and advocacy for the project.
